USA: Rival Crips and Bloods gangs unite to enforce curfew in Baltimore
Although minor scuffles broke out between gang affiliates, members of Baltimore's Crips and Bloods came together on Tuesday night to enforce the city's curfew, after violent clashes broke out between security forces and protesters following Freddie Gray's funeral, Monday.
Protesters and Baltimore residents could be seen cleaning the streets following the protests, as riot police and National Guard troops patrolled the streets with heavy military hardware including Humvees. Local community groups, including the Nation of Islam, were also among those requesting protesters to leave the streets ahead of Tuesday's curfew.
A reported 2,000 troops and 1,000 police are currently patrolling Baltimore, enforcing the curfew from 22:00 to 05.00 local time, after a state of emergency was declared on Monday night and the National Guard called in. Violence broke out just hours after the funeral of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, who died in police custody on April 19, 2015. Gray's family say he suffered a severe spinal injury, that his voice box was crushed and his neck was snapped before he went into a coma and died. Police reports indicate that these injuries were sustained after his arrest.
