USA: NPT depends on unity of world in rejecting nuclear proliferation, says Kerry
US Secretary of State John Kerry said that for the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) to work "the world has to remain united in rejecting the proliferation of nuclear weapons anywhere", whilst speaking at the United Nations headquarters in New York City, Monday.
Speaking at the opening of a United Nations conference on the NPT, Kerry stated that the USA is committed "to work through the challenges facing the NPT", adding that they must "leave the race for nuclear arms in the past and continue instead on a march towards peace and stability and prosperity."
The US Secretary of State also met with the Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif on the sidelines of the UN meeting, stating that a deal between the two countries is 'closer than ever', while Zarif called on Israel, which is not a signatory of the NPT, to give up its nuclear weapons.
