
Russia: Putin praises 'honourable work' of Russian Geographical Society
Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the Russian Geographical Society's dignified work during the group's session dedicated to their upcoming 170th anniversary in Saint Petersburg on Monday.
Putin highlighted the importance of the Geographical Society for its diverse projects, and its work in helping to reveal many historical events previously unknown about World War II. He added that several of the group's projects would be included in the official program of the 70th anniversary V-Day celebrations on May 9.
The Russian Geographical Society is Russia's oldest public organisation (NGO) and one of the oldest geographical societies worldwide. It was founded on August 6 in 1845 by Russian Tsar Nikolas I, first called the Imperial Russian Geographical Society.
