The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) used BE-200 planes to drop water on a huge fire near the village of Sivyakovo, Thursday. EMERCOM have been battling wildfires that have spread across large parts of southeast Siberia since April 13. The emergency operation experienced difficulties when low temperatures made it impossible for EMERCOM officials to extract water from local reservoirs to use on the wildfires.

The fires, which started in the Republic of Khakassia when local farmers began burning the grass in their fields, have left at least 30 people dead, 6000 people homeless and more than 1500 homes destroyed. EMERCOM reports that more than 6,700 people are involved in combating the wildfires, including firefighters, military personnel and volunteers.
