Syria: UNRWA chief urges 'respect' for refugees in Yarmouk
Pierre Krahenbuhl, Commissioner General of the UN Relief Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), visited the Syrian refugee camp of Yarmouk, Sunday.
The visit was triggered by UNRAWA's deepening concerns for the safety of around 18,000 Palestinian and Syrian civilians, including 3,500 children, as armed groups remain in control of Yarmouk. Krahenbuhl called on all parties to respect the safety of civilians inside the camp.
Since early April, fighters of the Islamic State (IS, former ISIS) and the al-Quaeda affiliated Al-Nusra Front have stormed Yarmouk, a Palestinian enclave in the suburbs of Damascus, seizing control of most of it by April 9. Hundreds of civilians are believed to have been killed since and about 5,000 people tried to flee Yarmouk to escape the armed conflict.
