Yemen: Russia evacuates 'abandoned' US citizens, among many others

As the US faced lawsuits from dozens of Americans stranded in Yemen, Russian services assisted in the processes of evacuation, Sunday. A State Department communique on their website advised US citizens in the country to "shelter in a secure location until they are able to depart safely." It also stated, categorically, that "[t]here are no plans for a U.S. government-coordinated evacuation of U.S. citizens at this time."

The US closed its conscular services and evacuated many key personnel in Yemen in February, following mounting instability as the Houthi forces took control of a large share of the country. However, US citizens working independently in Yemen found themselves stranded as international flights were frozen as the conflict escalated. One US citizen onboard the Russian plane said Americans in Yemen feel "they are being treated as second-class citizens." He added it was "quite ironic" Russia were coordinating their rescue.

The latest Red Cross reports on the conflict state that over 1,000 people have died since the Saudi-led airstrikes began. An estimated 16,000 foreign nationals remain trapped in the country, according to the International Organisation for Migration. The US support the Saudi-led coalition's campaign in Yemen, pledging to increase weapons delivery and assisting with the aerial refuelling of bombers.
