Israel: Orthodox worshippers gather round the 'Holy Fire' in Jerusalem
Thousands of worshipers gathered in Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Saturday for the Orthodox Easter 'Holy Fire' ceremony.
The ceremony began with a procession around the church, in which the pilgrims, mainly from Eastern Europe, lit torches and candles from a flame they believe is miraculously lit from the tomb of Jesus in the Holy Sepulchre Church on the eve of Orthodox Easter. The flame is due to travel to Bulgaria, Greece, Russia and other Orthodox countries.
The Holy Fire, which symbolises the resurrection of Christ, was first said to be witnessed in the ninth century.
