Germany: Inventors create handheld hydroelectric power station
Representatives from the German shareholder company Aquakin presented the Blue Freedom handheld hydroelectric power station by a stream in Fuerth, Tuesday.
Using a micro turbine, the Blue Freedom device can be used to generate energy through any source of flowing water. The micro turbine simply needs to be placed in the water for it to produce instant energy which can be used to charge cell phones, tablets or any other kind of small rechargeable batteries. All that’s required is that the water has a minimum speed of 1m/s. Within one hour a cell phone can be fully charged, which according to Aquakin staff, makes their product more efficient than any solar cell powered device.
Joy Schoeller, who is an apprentice at the company, is confident that the gadget can bring regenerative energy to 1.6 billion people worldwide who currently do not have access to energy.
The project has been on the crowd funding platform kickstarter.com for the last 24 days and has raised almost $107,000 ($97,379) to start the mass production of the Blue Freedom device.
