Sao Tome and Principe: Watch moment ship sinks in 'suspicious circumstances'
A rescue operation run by international conservation group Sea Shepherd was underway inside the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Sao Tome in the Gulf of Guinea, Monday, when a vessel named 'Thunder' sank under what Sea Shepherd members have labelled 'suspicious circumstances,' after it was noted that all hatches on the ship had been left open after the distress signal was sent, perhaps explaining why it sank so quickly.
Sea Shepherd ships Bob Barker and Sam Simon rescued up to 40 crew members from the Thunder before it sank, including the captain, officers and deck crew. Reports indicate there are no injuries.
Sea Shepherd had been involved in a four-month pursuit of the Thunder after it had been accused of Illegal, Unregulated, Unreported (IUU) fishing.
