
Turkey: Hundreds attend funeral of killed Turkish prosecutor
Hundreds attended the funeral ceremony of Turkish prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz at the Caglayan Justice Palace in Istanbul, Wednesday. Kiraz was killed during a shootout on Tuesday, after being taken hostage by two captors.
The ceremony was attended by top governmental officials - Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek, deputy prime ministers Bulent Arinc, Numan Kurtulmus and Yalcin Akdogan and Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag.
The two gunmen were killed instantly after the shootout with security forces on Tuesday; Kiraz died later from the injuries he sustained. The prosecutor had been taken hostage in his room by two suspected members of a banned far-left group, the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C). Kiraz had been leading an investigation into the death of Berkin Elvan, a teenager who died after he was hit by a police canister during the Gezi protests of 2013. Elvan died on March 11, 2014, after 269 days in a coma.
