
Montenegro: Flare strikes down Russia goalkeeper
Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was hit on the head by a firecracker in the first minute of the Euro 2016 qualifier with Montenegro at the Gradski Stadion in Podgorica, Friday. Akinfeev hit the ground as soon as the firecracker struck him and was taken from the pitch on a stretcher to a local hospital.
The referee, Deniz Aytekin, delayed the match for around 35 minutes before allowing the game to resume. Akinfeev who plies his trade at CSKA Moscow was replaced by Zenit Saint Petersburg's Yuriy Lodigin. The game was finally suspended after 75 minutes with the score 0-0.
Prior to the match, Russia and Montenegro were level on 5 points in UEFA European Championship Qualifying Table Group G, with the winner of the match hoping to close the gap on Sweden who are in second, and Austria who top the group.
