At an emotional press conference, the principal of Haltern High School described how he received information about the crashed Germanwings plane, and about the moment in which he lost hope that there would be any survivors, in Haltern-am-See on Wednesday. Sixteen pupils and two teachers of the school died in the plane crash.
Wessel explained that from the moment he heard the news in the morning, he kept hope that it wouldn't be his pupils and teachers affected. But at 2 pm when minister-president of North Rhine - Westphalia Hannelore Kraft called him, "the last bit of hope disappeared like a soap bubble," he said.
Flight 4U 9525 crashed into a mountainside while flying from Barcelona to Dusseldorf with 144 passengers and six crew members on board, on Tuesday March 24. It is believed that there are no survivors.
A black box flight recorder has been recovered from the crash site and will be examined as soon as possible, the French Interior Ministry has said.
