Germany: Pupils hold vigil at school of Germanwings crash victims
Pupils of the Joseph-Koenig-Gymnasium high school in Haltern-am-See held a silent vigil in front of their school building, Wednesday to commemorate the 16 pupils of the school who died in the Germanwings plane crash in France. Two teachers from the school were accompanying the students on their return flight to Germany following an exchange trip to Spain.
Hundreds of candles, flowers and pictures were placed in front of the school, after an initial commemoration ceremony was held on Tuesday evening. The head of the high school suspended all classes and sent students home following news of the incident.
The commemoration drew massive press attention, with journalists from across Europe gathering to cover events at the school. Later on in the day, German Minister of Education Sylvia Lohrmann is due to visit the school.
Flight 4U 9525 crashed into a mountainside while flying from Barcelona to Dusseldorf with 144 passengers and six crew members on board, on Tuesday March 24. It is believed that there are no survivors.
A black box flight recorder has been recovered from the crash site and will be examined as soon as possible, the French Interior Ministry has said.
