
Singapore: City-state mourns first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew
Singapore's first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, died on Monday at the age of 91.
Coming to leadership in 1959, Yew governed the city-state for 30 years after brokering a deal with Britain to relinquish the former colony in 1965. He stepped down as prime minster in 1990, but remained active in politics up until his death.
He died in Singapore General Hospital after suffering from severe pneumonia.
