France: Assembly votes for 'deep sedation' until death
With an absolute majority, the French National Assembly adopted a bill allowing physicians to 'deeply sedate' terminally ill people until they are dead, Tuesday.
The bill, which was proposed by deputies Alain Claeys (PS, Socialist Party) and Jean Leonetti (UMP, Union for a Popular Movement), received 470 votes for and 34 against.
Euthanasia is illegal in France, but President Hollande promised to re-open the issue in his campaign in 2012. The bill will now go to the French Senate for consideration.
