The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) announced that Hamburg will be the German bid city for the 2024 Olympic Games in Frankfurt, Monday, meaning that Berlin misses out. Germany last hosted the Olympic Games in 1972 in Munich.

The decision is expected to be approved on Saturday at the committee’s general assembly and it has been reported that the decision will also be subject to a referendum in Hamburg itself.

The other two cities that have been submitted and accepted by their respective Olympic bodies as potential venues are Rome, Italy and Boston, USA. Other National Olympic Committees (NOCs) have until September 15, 2015 to submit the name of their applicant venue to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The host of the games will be officially announced at the 130th IOC Session in Lima, Peru on September 15, 2017.
