
Russia: Moscow’s landmark 16th century Novodevichy Convent on fire
Russian firefighters were deployed to the iconic Novodevichy Convent in the heart of Moscow, Sunday to put out a blaze which had engulfed the building's bell-tower. The fire spread to the top of the tower, which was encased in scaffolding due to ongoing restoration work.
The Novodevichy Convent is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located close to the Kremlin. It’s also known as the Novodevichy Convent or the the Bogoroditse-Smolensky Monastery.
The monastery is also famous for its cemetery, where numerous prominent persons have been buried.
