Brussels: 'There is no Greek problem, there is a European problem' - Tsipras

Belgium, Brussels

It is time to provide the Greek people with good news, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said in Brussels Friday, following a meeting with the president of the EU Parliament Martin Schulz, which Tsipras described as productive.

Tsipras went on to say that Athens aimed to implement in good faith its compromise with the EU to extend Greece's loans by four months. "I believe that there is no Greek problem; there is a European problem. And because we are pro-European, and we want to go on together in a common future, I believe that by the end of the day we will solve all these misunderstandings," Tsipras stated.

Addressing the country's youth unemployment rate, which currently stands at around 60 percent, Tsipras said that the EU would help to tackle Greece's social problems in "particular ways." Schulz specified a potential discussion between Greece and the EU about mobilizing money out of the EU Youth Guarantee programme to aid Athens in its fight against unemployment.

The meeting between Schulz and Tsipras was dedicated to addressing Greece's social problems and an economic growth plan for the country. Tsipras was later scheduled to meet with the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker. Friday's meetings coincided with the day Greece was expected to repay a €340 million ($360 million) tranche of an IMF loan.
