MEPs voted in favour of a resolution regarding the killing of Russian politician Boris Nemtsov and the state of democracy in Russia, during a plenary session of the European Parliament (EP) in Strasbourg, Thursday.

The joint motion, agreed between five the EP's seven political groups, condemned Nemtsov's death and stated that "the killing is one of a growing number of unresolved politically motivated murders and suspicious deaths perpetrated in Russia since 1998". Furthermore it requested an independent international investigation into the murder using the instruments available within the framework of the OSCE, the Council of Europe and the United Nations to ensure an impartial and fair investigation.

The vote follows a debate held in the European Parliament on Wednesday over the murder of Nemtsov and the general state of democracy in Russia.
