Spain: Rampaging students EGG the Barcelona stock exchange
Over 5,000 student protesters took to the streets of Barcelona to protest against government plans to cut the length of university degrees, on Thursday. As the demonstration passed the Barcelona Stock Exchange some protesters broke off and splattered the building with paint and eggs. Protesters ended the march by forcing their way into the University Rectory and starting an occupation of the premises.
The demonstration comes as Spain's Education Minister Jose Ignacio Wert announced plans to cut the length of undergraduate degrees from four-to-six years, to a limit of three. The minister declared that the reform will cut costs by up to €150 million($168 million) a year. Many students, deans and tutors are against the measure, arguing that the change will increase costs for the universities.
