Thailand: Mosha, the three-legged elephant, just got a new leg!
Mosha, a nine-year-old female elephant, was fixed with a new prosthetic leg on Thursday in Lampang. Mosha lost her limb stepping on a landmine in 2006. The MaeYao National Reserve, which claims to have built the world’s first hospital for elephants, has fitted her with five prosthetic limbs since she arrived in 2006, just two days after the accident. The first prosthesis was attached to the remaining part of Mosha's leg when she was just seven months old. As she grows in size, she needs ever larger bespoke prosthesis to keep her on the move.
The MaeYao National Reserve opened by Soraida Salwala. To date it has treated over 3,900 cases of sick and injured elephants since 1993. They treat the creatures for everything from knife wounds to eye infections, drug addictions and broken bones.
