Russia: Putin vows military parity with all, whatever the circumstance
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that no one should harbour any illusions about it being possible to achieve military supremacy over Russia during an address at Moscow's Grand Kremlin Palace on Friday. The Russian leader was attending a gala marking Defender of the Fatherland Day, commemorating past and present members of the Russian Armed Forces.
Putin told the audience that Russia would always have an adequate military response to reckless actions from outside the country. He added that the government were carrying out an ambitious programme to modernise the army, navy, air and space defences - as well as nuclear forces. Putin stressed that Russia would continue to carry out military development plans no matter what the circumstances.
The president also congratulated the veterans, armed forces servicemen and civilian personnel on the upcoming commemorative holiday. Earlier in the day, Putin presented jubilee medals to Second World War veterans marking the 70th anniversary of Russia's victory in the 1941-1945.
