Russia: Putin honours WWII veterans with anniversary medal
Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded medals to veterans of the Great Patriotic War (World War II) during a ceremony at the Hall of the Order of St. George of the Grand Kremlin Palace, in Moscow on Friday.
The 70th Anniversary of Victory in the 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War jubilee medals were awarded to a number of veterans, including former Heroes of the Soviet Union and Full Cavaliers of the Order of Glory.
The Russian president said that it was a "great honour" to present the awards and stressed how important it was "that new generations have the opportunity to learn the truth about the Great Patriotic War."
The jubilee medal was established in 2013 to mark veterans' contribution to defeating the Nazis during the war. The event in the Kremlin marks the start of a series of ceremonies to be held across Russia.
