Forces of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk people's republics flew the flag of Novorossiya on the outskirts of newly captured Debaltsevo, Thursday. Militia commander 'Yustas' said his forces had found "five infantry fighting vehicles and two tanks" abandoned by the Ukrainian army, in addition ro a collection of RPGs and small arms.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko ordered his troops to retreat from Debaltsevo, Wednesday, after weeks of heavy fighting in the area. Militia engineering units have started clearing urban areas and the railway line of unexploded ordnance and mines that were also left behind by the Ukrainian Army.

Anti-Kiev forces say they had surrounded Ukrainian soldiers for weeks in what became known as the 'Debaltsevo cauldron.' Kiev meanwhile says its military forces were never trapped in Debaltsevo, a strategic railway hub that connects the regions of Lugansk and Donetsk.

The head of Donetsk People’s Republic Alexander Zakharchenko has appointed Alexander Afendikov as a new mayor of Debaltsevo.
