Ukraine: Ukrainian POWs captured at Debaltsevo told 'no one will harm you'
A commander of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DNR/DPR) promised over 60 Ukrainian prisoners of war that they would be treated with “honour and dignity” after they surrendered on Tuesday in Debaltsevo.
An officer commanding the anti-Kiev forces in the area, Colonel Kiselev, told the POWs that they would be treated fairly and humanely. He said that they would be offered food, the chance to clean themselves and possibly a change of clothing while promising them they would return home. The colonel also promised them that “no one will harm you or beat you.”
The group of soldiers had been surrounded in the so-called 'Debaltsevo Cauldron' before deciding to give up their positions.
Kiev troops surrounded in Debalstevo have started to surrender en masse, DNR officials have said. President Petro Poroshenko announced a complete withdrawal from the contested city.
