India: Unmarried couples attacked on Valentine’s Day
Members of a group who believe Valentine's Day promotes Western culture and promiscuity attacked Indian couples at a restaurant in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. Members of the group are reported to have claimed that they wanted to 'marry off unwed couples' caught in the act of displaying affection in public.
On entering the restaurant they confronted a couple and started to hit and shove the man. Police arrived at the scene after restaurant staff made a complaint, and arrested some of the group members.
Throughout the day it has been reported that several groups attacked people who they deem to have been 'corrupted' by the 'destructive' influence of Western culture across the nation. Protests were also organised in several cities, with people planning to burn greeting cards and attack lovers in public places to show their disapproval.
