Speaking in a televised address, President Nicolas Maduro announced that a coup plot against the Venezuelan government, including an attempt on his life, has been thwarted by authorities on Thursday.

Speaking on a state television broadcast, Maduro said that the coup plotters planned to use an EMB 314 Super Tucano to bomb the Miraflores Palace in Caracas or wherever the president was supposed to be during the National Youth Day celebrations.

Maduro called on the people of Venezuela and the armed forces to "be on high alert" during the coming days.
