UK: See first STRAW homes in Britain

United Kingdom, Bristol
February 12, 2015 at 01:34 GMT +00:00 · Published

Environmentally friendly homes built of straw have gone up for sale on the British property market. Footage released by the University of Bath, Thursday shows the straw-bale housing project in Shirehampton, Bristol, where seven straw townhouses are currently under construction. Their walls are built of compressed straw contained within a timber frame and clad with red brick.

Research into straw as a building material was carried out by the University of Bath's Department of Architecture Civil Engineering, leading to industry certification for straw homes. The BM TRADA’s Q-Mark certification means homeowners and developers can now get insurance and mortgages for buildings built from the sustainable material. The certification guarantees fire safety, energy efficiency and weather-resilience, among other guarantees.

Professor Pete Walker explained the benefits of straw as a construction material, emphasising the fact that buildings constructed from the renewable source are energy efficient. Fuel bill reductions could potentially be as high as 90 percent compared to a typical home due to straw's greater insulation properties.
