Serbia: Windows SMASHED in violent clashes aftermath

Serbia, Pristina
January 28, 2015 at 17:38 GMT +00:00 · Published

Smashed windows and overturned benches marked the streets of Pristina in the early hours of Wednesday morning in the aftermath of violent clashes which left 80 injured, and 100 arrested.

Around 2,000 protesters took to the streets on Tuesday calling for the resignation of Aleksandar Jablanovic, a Serbian minister who allegedly insulted Albanian war victims. The protesters clashed with police as they attempted to breach a government building close to Skanderbeg Square in the centre of the city. Several participants were injured during the standoff, reportedly including the city’s mayor-elect Shpend A. Ahmeti.

The demonstration was organised after Jablanovic, the minister for communities and returns of Kosovo, called a group of Albanians ‘savages’ on Jan. 6 after they had prevented several Serb pilgrims from entering an Orthodox Christian Church in the south western town of Djakovica. The government has said Jablanovic will not be dismissed.

Jablanovic, who is one of three Serb ministers in the Kosovar government, has since apologised for his remark.
