Pakistan: The world's most dangerous women? Elite female police unit in action
A new female-only Elite Police Force unit trained in Naushehra, Pakistan on Wednesday. They have been named ‘Friends of the Proud and Terror for the Terrorists’ and are being trained to specifically face the threat of the Taliban who are operating in north-west Pakistan.
The recruits are mainly taken from the Pakhtoon society, where it is custom for women not to leave the house without a male member of their family, and to keep their heads covered while in the presence of men.
Security officials say the growing Taliban threat, which manifested itself in the massacre at a school in Peshawar, where 145 people were killed including 132 school children, has led the women to disregard tradition and join the fight.
