Russia: See Russia's new Arctic Warfare Division in action
The Russian Army’s new Arctic Warfare division was put through its paces to acclimatize to extreme weather conditions in the Murmansk region on Saturday. The motorised division, which is now Russia's first line of defence in the Arctic, was deployed to the Kola Peninsula earlier this month.
Based in Alakurtti, north of the Arctic Circle, the unit is equipped with vehicles specially adapted to operations in such conditions. Vehicles include the MT-LBV Light armoured transport vehicle, the Vityaz DT-30PM all-terrain vehicle, snowmobiles and quadbikes.
The MT-LBV Light armoured transport vehicle is equipped with a 240 horsepower engine facilitating a maximum speed of 38.2 mph (61.5 km/h) over land and 3.7 mph (6 km/h) through water. It weighs in at 11.7 long tons (11888 kg), has a maximum load capacity of 2.5 long tons (2540 kg) and can accommodate 13 people; two crew and 11 soldiers.
The Vityaz DT-30PM all-terrain vehicle has a maximum speed of 28 mph (45 km/h) over land and 3.7 mph (6 km/h) through water. The 13.75 m (45.1 ft) long vehicle weighs in at 30 long tons (30481 kg) and can carry up to 19 people on board including two crew members.
