An unknown gunman allegedly armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle and numerous grenades took several people hostage Colombes, in northwest Paris, Friday.

The hostages were seized at around 13:00 CET (12:00 GMT) when the gunman charged into a post office brandishing a weapon. The hostage taker gave himself up to police after a short stand-off and was arrested.

There is currently no indication that there is any link to the recent shootings in Paris which left 17 dead including journalists, police officers and shoppers at a kosher supermarket.
