Ukraine: Severe Donetsk Airport shelling stretches into night
Artillery fire lit up the sky near the Donetsk Airport early Thursday, as heavy shelling in the area continued. Loud booms could also be heard following the bright flashes.
The shelling comes after heavy fighting Tuesday and Wednesday near the airport and a reported ultimatum against Kiev forces in the area, who were purportedly told they had until 1700 local time Tuesday (1500 GMT) to leave or face destruction.
The ultimatum was reportedly issued by the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DNR/DPR).
