
France: Eiffel Tower is on LOCKDOWN after Charlie Hebdo attack
Armed police and military patrolled the base of the Eiffel Tower in central Paris on Wednesday after the threat alert was raised to the highest level following an armed attack on the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.
Camouflage-clad soldiers carrying Famas assault rifles stood guard at the foot of the iconic landmark. The Eiffel Tower is among many places in central Paris to have been put under high security, including several other public spaces, train stations, and places of worship.
At least 12 people, including two police officers, were killed and several more critically injured when three armed gunmen opened fire at Charlie Hebdo magazine's HQ in central Paris. The men, dressed in black commando outfits, entered the building and fired off a number of rounds from Kalashnikov assault rifles. They fled in a stolen car following a shoot-out with police. The men have reportedly been identified and a manhunt is currently underway in Paris.
