France: Police lock down Charlie Hebdo HQ after Paris massacre

France, Paris
January 7, 2015 at 11:43 GMT +00:00 · Published

At least 12 people, including two police officers, were killed and several more critically injured when armed gunmen opened fire at the headquarters of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in central Paris Wednesday.

According to preliminary reports, two men dressed in black hoods entered the building and fired off a number of rounds from Kalashnikov assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenade launchers. They fled in a stolen car following a shoot-out with police. A manhunt is currently underway in Paris with reports that the Anti-Crime Brigade (BAC) are chasing two armed men in the 11th district of the city. Paris has raised the alert status to its highest level. Police were seen securing the area outside the newspaper's HQ.

The recent attack is not the first time Charlie Hebdo has been targeted. In 2011 their headquarters were firebombed after the newspaper printed a cover illustration of the Prophet Muhammad and named the prophet as its "editor-in-chief" for the issue, which it temporarily renamed ‘Charia Hebdo.’ No one was injured in the attack but the offices were destroyed in the blaze. The French newspaper also printed a set of cartoons in 2012 featuring the Prophet Muhammad, including one depicting the prophet naked.

The last tweet to feature on the Charlie Hebdo Twitter account before Wednesday's attack was an illustration of IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
