USA: Flying hound dog! Elvis' planes up for auction
Two private jets owned by Elvis Presley, the Lisa Marie and Hound Dog II, will be going up for auction, it was announced Saturday at the late singer's Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tennessee. Although neither of the planes are in a condition that allows them to be flown, they have been on display at Graceland for more than 30 years.
The Lisa Marie, named after Elvis' daughter, was purchased in 1975 and contains a master suite with a full-size bed and a conference room, bathroom with gold taps, and a 50-speaker stereo system. Refurbishing the Convair 880 jet alone cost Elvis $300,000 (€250,000). The other plane, the Hound Dog II, was also purchased in 1975 and named after Elvis' 1956 version of the 1952 song by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The plane, a Lockheed JetStar, arrived at Graceland in 1984.
The planes are to be sold as one lot, with the option to buy land next to Graceland to display them. The planes are being auctioned by Julien's.
