Egypt: Cairo court orders retrial for jailed Al-Jazeera journalists
A retrial for the case of jailed Al-Jazeera journalists Peter Greste, Mohamed Fadel Fahmy and Baher Mohamed was ordered by the Court of Cassation in Cairo, Thursday.
The decision was made during Thursday’s hearing at Cairo’s Supreme Courthouse, where the judge in charge of the case moved forward with the session in the absence of the journalists, who will remain detained without bail for the time being.
Marwa Emara, fiance of one of Mohamed Fahmy, was present at the court and described the situation as a nightmare saying, “This is not only a punishment for him, but for me and all our family.”
The three Al-Jazeera journalists have been jailed for over one year, since December 29, 2013 under charges of aiding the ousted Muslim Brotherhood and spreading false news.
