Thailand: Beached police boat symbolises grief for tsunami victims
Hundreds of people gathered at Khao Lak for a remembrance service at the Police Boat 813 memorial, 10 years to the day after a deadly tsunami struck the area, Friday. There were a series of solemn events and religious rites throughout the day.
Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha and other dignitaries laid wreaths for victims at the site of a beached police boat that has become a symbol of the disaster. Dozens of people lit candles at the event.
Thai police boat 813 was swept nearly 2 km (1.2 miles) inland from the sea-shore at Bang Niang near Phuket. Nearly 5,500 people died in Thailand in December 2004, half of them foreign tourists.
