Russia: See 11-yr-old cadets train at Suvorov Military School

The Moscow branch of the famed Suvorov Military Schools celebrated its 70th birthday, Thursday, with cadets aged 10-17 seen training and taking classes during the day.

Seven decades on from the academy’s founding during World War II, cadets continue to practice using firearms, marching in formation, and of course enjoying the comradery of living in a boarding school. Although militarily focused, the institution does not neglect academics, with all cadets required to study at least two foreign languages, as well as sciences, maths and humanities.

The school head, Major-General Aleksandrov Kasyanov, said the academy was dedicated to the education of the citizen-soldier. He added that it put a strong emphasis on discipline, hierarchy, and obedience to authority while providing a patriotic education. After completing their studies at the Suvorov Military School, most students go on to the higher military educational institutions in Russia.

The Suvorov Schools were first set up in December 1943 during the Nazi onslaught on the Soviet Union. They were considered particularly valuable, not just for educational purposes, but also for housing and teaching the many orphans who lost their parents during the war.
