Poland: Protesters decry public spending on Temple of Divine Providence

Poland, Warsaw
December 20, 2014 at 13:12 GMT +00:00 · Published

Hundreds gathered outside the Polish Parliament (Sejm) in Warsaw, Saturday to protest against planned state funding for the construction of the 'Temple of Divine Providence' ('Świątynia Opatrzności Bożej').

Protesters disagreed with parliament's decision to spend €4 million ($4.89 million) on the construction of the new national landmark, located in the Wilanow district of Warsaw. They held banners reading "Only providence, watch over culture" and "Stop spending public money on the construction of temples." Around 30,000 people have joined the protest group online.

The Roman Catholic Temple of Divine Providence is designed to be a national and religious symbol for Poland. The complex comprises the 'Church of Divine Providence,' the 'Museum of John Paul II' and the 'Pantheon of Great Poles' and has been under construction for 12 years. The costs already add up to €48 million ($58.7 million), including €17.5 million ($21.4 million) from the public purse.
