Italy: See police vs. workers in fiery Milan clashes
Clashes broke out between police and protesters as hundreds of Italian workers descended on the streets of Milan, Friday. They were joined by thousands of other workers in over 50 nationwide strikes, hitting hospitals, schools and public transport to demonstrate against labour market reforms.
The police made several arrests, and protesters threw fire crackers and smoke bombs at the officers wearing riot gear. Unionists are striking against Prime Minister Mario Renzi's Jobs Act, which will make it easier for companies to hire and fire staff. Supporters of the Jobs Act believe it could shake up Italy's economy and help reduce stubbornly high unemployment.
Renzi stated early Friday that he disagrees with the unionists, but wishes them "good luck […] striking, with respect and without polemics." In October, unemployment stood at 13.2 percent, with unemployment among 15-25-year-olds at a record 43.3 percent.
