France: Masked 'Manif pour Tous' members rally against surrogacy
Around 150 Manif pour Tous protesters gathered in front of the Council of State of the French Republic in Paris, Friday. Members of the council were deciding whether to validate a circular bill passed on January 25, 2013, known as the “circulaire Taubira”, it being the brain child of French Minister of Justice Christiane Taubira. The ruling gives children born to French parents abroad - even by surrogacy - the right to be given French nationality.
Demonstrators were present in the hope that the ruling would be overturned. There are fears that the bill may open the door to a customer and wholesaler relationship in the field of procreation, especially with regard to surrogacy and adoption. Ludovine de la Rochere, leader of La Manif pour Tous, declared that "surrogacy is human trafficking, a form of human trade, a form of slavery. No, surrogacy is just like slavery, we don't frame it, we abolish it!"
Despite the protest, the Council of State declared that all requests made against the validity of the Taubira circular had been rejected.
