Germany: Refugee homes torched in Bavaria

Germany, Vorra
December 12, 2014 at 20:51 GMT +00:00 · Published

Neo-Nazis set alight three buildings that had been renovated for a refugee housing project, Thursday night in Vorra, a village near Nuremberg in Bavaria.

A neighbour called the fire department Thursday night after she noticed smoke coming out of the restaurant 'Gasthof zur Goldenen Krone' ('Restaurant of the golden crown'), a part of one of the buildings earmarked for the housing project. The building project was sponsored by the government of the Mittelfranken region and was empty at the time of the attack. One fireman was injured tackling the blaze but no additional casualties were reported. The damage to the buildings is estimated at €700,000 ($871,000).

Joachim Herrmann, minister for internal affairs of Bavaria, arrived at the crime scene at 12:30 local time Friday to inspect the situation, talk to relief forces and give a first statement to the media.

Herrmann called it a disgraceful attack but stressed that Turkish citizens don't have to worry since Bavaria is "among the safest places for them, having the lowest crime rate in the whole of Europe - including Turkey." He stated that fascism has no place in German society, adding that it is necessary to accommodate refugees within that society, rather than locking them up behind fences in large camps. His party, the CSU, is known for fighting fascist developments within Bavaria and has called for the far-right NPD to be banned on the grounds that it is xenophobic.
