Members of the Holy Rood Church gathered to protest against police brutality and racial discrimination on Sunday in Chicago's South Side, encouraging passing vehicles at the corners of S Ashland Avenue and W 95th Street to support them by honking. The protest came as about 100 churches throughout the city staged protests after Sunday services.

Protesters chanted phrases including "I can't breathe" and "black lives matter" while holding signs bearing messages such as 'Hands up, don't shoot, stop the violence' and 'Black man unarmed.'

The protest comes less than a week after a grand jury decided not to indict New York Police Department (NYPD) officer Daniel Pantaleo in the July 17 death of African-American Eric Garner. Garner died after Pantaleo put him in a chokehold as multiple NYPD officers attempted to detain him on charges of selling loose cigarettes. Garner was unarmed at the time of his death.
