Maldives: Fresh-water crisis hits the Maldives
Residents of the Male had to queue for bottles of clean water, Sunday after a fire at a desalination plant caused severe shortages. Maldivians face up to three days without adequate supplies of tap water.
There has been mounting anger over the shortage with reports of mass brawls among residents, and attacks on shops selling rationed bottled water. The crisis has forced Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen to cut short a trip to Malaysia.
Yameen has been working with regional neighbours to alleviate the crisis, organising shipments of bottled water from Sri Lanka, India and China. Beijing has shipped 1,000 tonnes of fresh water to the Maldives.
