Spain: Spanish PM visits Catalonia for first time since November 9 independence poll
Visiting Catalonia for the first time since the November 9 independence poll on Catalan independence, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy addressed an audience at the Gran Marina Eurostars Hotel in Barcelona on Saturday.
Rajoy will not engage with Catalonia's regional government including First Minister of Catalonia Arthur Mas on the visit, but is planning to meet meeting with with his political party Partido Popular (Popular Party) within Catalonia.
While 81 percent of voters backed independence in the November 9 poll, Rajoy has argued that the low turnout of 37 percent proves that most Catalans are opposed to independence from Spain.
