
Italy: Protesters clash with police as Renzi visits Catania, Sicily
Protesters firing smoke bombs and chanting "Shame shame, no police state" clashed with police in riot gear in the Sicilian city of Catania on Friday as they tried to force through a police blockade to get to the town hall where Prime Minister Matteo Renzi was due to visit.
The clashes between dozens of unauthorised protesters and police took place on Vittorio Emanuele II Street close to the Cathedral square where the Catania Cathedral is located.
Renzi arrived in Catania accompanied by Secretary Graziano Delrio to meet the Catania Mayor Enzo Bianco.
