Russia: See the Sukhoi Su-27SM's just deployed to Crimea
Fourteen combat fighters set to boost the Russian air force in Crimea landed at Belbek airport on Wednesday. The four Sukhoi Su-30 (NATO reporting name: Flanker-C) and ten Su-27 SM (NATO reporting name: Flanker) will join the 62nd Fighter Regiment of the 27th Combined Air Division of the Russian Air Force, where they will be on active air defence duty.
The Su-27 and the Su-30 are two of Russia's most advanced and powerful fighters. Praised as all-weather super-manoeuvrable fighters they are known for their ability to strike from any angle.
The Su-27 is a long-range jet equipped with a 30 mm GSh-30 cannon. It is able to carry up to six medium range (R-27R, R-27RE, R-27T or R-27ET) air-to-air missiles. Alternatively there is the option of carrying four R-73E short range air-to-air missiles. The Flanker can also carry the S-8 multiple launch rocket system, the S-13 unguided rocket weapon, or the S-24 or S-25 air-to-ground for surface attacks.
The Su-30 is a variant of the Su-27 and carries a 30mm gun GSh-30-1 cannon alongside twelve so-called hardpoints to hold missiles or missile systems under its wings and fuselage. It can carry up to six air-to-air (either R-77, R-27ET, R-73E, or R-77 missile) and air-to-surface (Kh-31) missiles, laser-guided missiles (Kh-29) as well as conventional bombs. The aircraft is also equipped with anti-radiation missiles.
