Turkey: Denied Gezi Park, Taksim demo tastes TEARGAS
Scuffles broke out between law enforcement and protesters in Istanbul, Sunday, after riot police broke up a Republican People’s Party (CHP) youth branch rally with teargas.
Organised under the banner of ‘Occupy the World for the Construction of a Better One’, members of the CHP’s Istanbul youth branch and socialist youth leaders planned to issue a press statement on the steps of Gezi Park. However, riot police intervened, using tear gas to disperse the crowd. Several protesters attempted to escape via a hotel located on Taksim Square, where they were followed by the security forces.
One of the organisers, İrfan İnanç Yıldız, head of the CHP Youth Branch, reportedly asked the police for permission to film at the steps of Gezi Park during the rally, but was told that protest locations in Istanbul were set and could not be changed.
