Switzerland: "No respect of international human rights norms in Ukraine" - UN
"Civilians continue to be killed, illegally detained, [and] tortured," particularly in Eastern Ukraine, United Nations Human Rights Chief Gianni Magazzeni said Thursday in Geneva. His words came as the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) released a report stating the number of people internally displaced in Ukraine has continued to rise and human rights abuses continue despite a Sept. 5 ceasefire between the Kiev government and anti-Kiev fighters.
Magazzeni added that the human rights situation continues to be most severe in Eastern Ukraine, where he said an average of 13 people are killed each day as a result of fighting. Magazzeni also said there have been "increasing reports of torture, arbitrary detention, summary executions, forced labour, [and] sexual violence" in the region.
